Halloween party planning can be stressful enough without adding healthy Halloween treats to a list of Halloween party supplies. Here are recipes for easy healthy snacks.

Halloween party decorations, Halloween party costumes, and Halloween party invitations are plentiful in the stores, but coming up with ideas for healthy Halloween treats can be a challenge. The phrase "healthy Halloween", itself, can seem like a contradiction, but these three nutritious, healthy Halloween recipes prove otherwise. Temper the sugar buzz of trick-or-treating with these healthy recipes for protein-packed creepy, spooky snacks. They're great for a kids Halloween party or for an adult Halloween party.

Healthy Halloween Treats Muenster Beetles are Creepy, Crawling Cheese Bugs to Eat

Ingredients:

  • Mozzarella cheese sticks (or other soft block cheese, like Muenster )
  • Crispy chow mein noodles (available in the ethnic or international section of most grocery stores)

Directions:

  1. Cut cheese sticks in 4 equal pieces. If using block cheese, cube it into chunks about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide
  2. For authentic 6-legged insects insert 3 chow mein noodles into each long side of the cheese chunks
  3. Add two chow mein noodles to the "head" for antennae

Note: Cheddar makes a bright and colorful beetle, but can be very frustrating for little fingers as the cheese is a bit too hard to press the noodles into without breaking. Use softer cheese such as gouda, havarti, monterey jack, or even mozzarella. Recipe by Amanda Formaro from FamilyCorner.com. Used by permission.

Bloody Witch's Fingers and Goblin Toes Hot Dog Treats – Healthy Halloween Party Food They'll Gobble Up

Ingredients:

  • Hot dogs (look for organic, nitrate-free meat varieties, or tofu dogs)
  • Almond slices
  • Ketchup

Directions:

  1. Carefully notch each hot dog to create creases on the "knuckles"
  2. Broil until plump and just beginning to brown
  3. Remove from heat and let cool until they can be handled
  4. Make a small slit near the end of each hot dog and insert the almond slice fingernail
  5. Decorate with ketchup blood

Note: For shorter goblin toes, cut each hot dog in half before cooking and then notch only one set of knuckle creases.

Spooky Peanut Butter Spider Crackers – Healthy Halloween Snacks to Munch

Ingredients:

  • Round crackers (such as Ritz)
  • Peanut butter (substitute sunflower seed butter or cream cheese if any invited guests have peanut allergies)
  • Crunchy chow mein noodles or thin pretzels
  • Raisins, diced dried cranberries or other diced dried fruit

Directions:

  1. Spread cracker with peanut butter
  2. Insert chow mein noodles for legs
  3. Top with another cracker
  4. Use a dab of peanut butter to stick on raisin or cranberry eyes

Note: Real arachnids have eight legs, but six will still make a cute bug if you don't have enough room for all eight.

Sugar overload can send even the best Halloween party into a tailspin fast. These protein-powered nutritious treats are still festive and appropriately creepy. Keep everyone on an even keel this Halloween and balance out all the candy and sugar that's sure to come with trick-or-treating with these healthy Halloween party ideas.
