Cupcakes are usually thought of as cute, but when serving them at adult gatherings, they can become chic with a few special touches.

Who doesn’t love a cupcake? While they have a reputation of being cute, and a favorite snack for kids, they can also be fabulous desserts for adults. Sometimes, it’s necessary to ditch the sprinkles and candies in favor of something over the top. Here are the cupcake decorations to use when you’re entertaining a grown up crowd.

Pomegranate Seeds

The pomegranate is seen as exotic, and the ruby seeds of this fruit look great against the contrast of most frostings, especially white. Pomegranates are becoming easier to find in grocery stores, and are also easy on the wallet. Simply crack open a pomegranate, carefully scrape out the seeds, and sprinkle them onto cupcakes for a different look and taste.

Metallic Sugars

Decorating sugars are a fairly ordinary thing, unless it’s metallic sugar. These decorations look like floating jewels when dusted onto cupcakes. The favorite metallic sugar color is gold, but they also come in vibrant silver, red, blue, green, and hot pink. Metallic sugars are a fun decoration for grown ups, and they’re 100% edible.

Transfer Designs

Edible transfer papers come in many colors and patterns, but when hosting an adult gathering and serving cupcakes, go for the avant-garde designs. Chose bolder colors and starker contrasts- your cupcakes will look like miniature works of art. Transfer paper can be bought at most baking supply stores, or online from stores such as Country Kitchen SweetArt and Kitchen Krafts.

Sugared Flowers

They add a simple touch, but sugared flowers never fail to impress a crowd; violet and rose petals look especially lovely when candied and used as a cupcake topping. To make your own, first ensure that you chose edible flowers, grown without pesticides or chemicals. Dissolve one cup of sugar in one cup of water to make a simple syrup, then dip the flower petals in the mixture. Immediately dip the petals in sugar, and let them dry before use.

Gold Leaf

Perhaps the most extravagant topping for cupcakes, or any dessert, is gold leaf. Gold leaf is real, edible gold that is hammered very thin. It is moderately priced, and perfect for weddings, anniversaries, and special celebrations. When using gold leaf to decorate your cupcakes, go all out; champagne and liqueur flavored cupcakes topped with gold leaf are the ultimate in decadence. Gold leaf can be purchased from online retailers such as EdibleGold.com.

Try any of these decorating ideas the next time you serve cupcakes to a party of adults, and you’ll be guaranteed to receive compliments and no leftovers.
