Halloween is the one time of the year where it's just fine to give delicious recipes some rather frightening and gross-sounding names.

Halloween parties feature dishes that you could only get away with serving on October 31. It’s a day where playing tricks and giving out treats is not only an expectation but also a delight.

If you’re throwing a Halloween party with a spooky theme, consider these recipes to up the scare-factor at your party. Or, try variations on your own recipes by taking your favorite party food and giving it a ghostly name.

Creepy Fingers in a Blanket

This is a fun kid-friendly take on the traditional, fall time favorite appetizer, “Pigs in a Blanket.”

Ingredients:

  • 1 package pre-cooked cocktail sausages
  • 1-2 rolls of refrigerated croissant dough
  • 1 bag shredded cheddar cheese
  • Garlic powder, to taste

  1. Take 1-2 rolls of refrigerated croissant dough and cut the triangular pieces into more narrow triangles or rectangles. Dash garlic powder across the dough.
  2. Open a package of pre-cooked cocktail sausages, and place one sausage on each triangle or rectangle or croissant dough.
  3. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon of cheddar cheese on each piece.
  4. Roll the dough along with their contents all the way around, creating a “blanket.”
  5. Bake them on a cookie sheet in the oven according to dough package directions. Take them out of the oven early if necessary to prevent over-cooking. Serve these as appetizers with ketchup or barbecue dipping sauce.
Monster Brain Cheese Ball

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups American cheese
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese
  • ½ package onion soup mix
  • Salt and garlic powder, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper

  1. Melt American cheese with cheddar cheese and cream cheese.
  2. To the melted mixture, add onion soup mix, and season with 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper and a dash of salt and garlic powder.
  3. Stir mixture together and shape ingredients into a ball.
  4. Roll cheese ball in chopped walnut pieces and serve with crackers.
Eyeball Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 large batches of homemade or store-bought brownies
  • 1 package small marshmallows
  • 1 can white icing
  • 1 package red hot candies
  • 1 package chocolate chip morsels

  1. For a batch of homemade or store-bought brownies, take a package of small marshmallows and situate the marshmallows in pairs across the batch of brownies until it is evenly covered. The marshmallows will serve as the “eyeballs.”
  2. When the marshmallows are well-distributed in pairs, take small dabs of white icing and place it on the bottom of each marshmallow to act as “glue,” so they will stay in place on the brownie.
  3. Allow the icing under the marshmallows to dry.
  4. Taking a red hot candy or chocolate chip morsel, place a small dab of white icing on them and gently place them in the center of each marshmallow. These will serve as the “pupils” for the “eyes.”
  5. Continue assembling the candies and chocolate chips on each marshmallow until each has a piece. Allow the icing to dry, and cut the brownies into individual pieces, with a pair of eyes on each, and serve.
