Turn the top of a cake or cupcake into a spider's web with a few simple steps and some icing.

Need a themed Halloween treat without any fuss? Turn a plain cake or cupcakes into a spider's web with just a few easy steps.

First, you'll need a frosted cake or cupcakes. It really doesn't matter what colour the frosting is, but white, chocolate, or orange would suit Halloween the best. These can be homemade or store bought.

Make up a batch of frosting, or get the ready-made stuff from the grocery store. Make sure the frosting is in a contrasting colour to the frosting on the cake. To colour it yourself, just stir in some food colouring, a few drops at time, until you reach your desired shade.

Next, scoop some of that frosting into a plastic zippered bag. Seal the zipper and cut a small hole in one corner of the bottom of the bag. Pipe a few concentric circles around the cake, starting with a small circle in the middle and adding more until you reach the outer edge of the cake. Then take a butter knife, toothpick, or skewer and, starting in the centre of the cake, lightly scrape straight lines from the middle of the cake to the edge, leaving a few inches between them. (With cupcakes, you'll have to make the lines a bit closer together, of course.) There's an illustration of the circles and lines right here.

Voila! A Spider web topped cake. You can get fancy and make little spiders out of candy if you'd like, or leave the cake as is. Happy Halloween!
